Scarlett Johansson has some thoughts about stem cell research.  Well, I don't know if thoughts is the appropriate term, but she had some words come out of her mouth that could be mistaken for a coherent sentence.

"I think that there's a lot of wonderful possibilities erupting.  I mean, if they could eliminate diseases like Alzheimer's and polio that would be incredible.  On the same note, people may say you're playing with fate or the idea of people creating a master race or being able to choose their children's eye colour - and that seems quite strange to me."

So apparently:

1. Scarlett cannot distinguish between genetic engineering and stem cell research.

2. Scarlett does not know that Alzheimer's being a 'whole brain' disease, cannot be cured by stem cell therapy.

3. Scarlett does not kow that polio, being a viral infection, cannot be cured by stem cell research.

4. Scarlett does not know that polio has already been eradicated in the US and the other industrialized countries, a vaccine having existed for public use since 1955.

As a backer of stem cell research, this level of ignorance is frightful to me since it undermines my position.  She must have gone to public school.

Scarlett Johannson does seem to have problems in the intelligence way, but what Jessica Alba said wasn't neccesarily stupid, John.

Are we going to have a thread about this for Nancy Reagan?

She must have gone to public school, too, because I'm certainly sure that's the reason - as opposed to wide media miscoverage - that many people think that stem cell research could cure Alzheimer's.

I don't know about smart. In fact, I've seen her in three movies now (Man Who Wasn't there, Ghost Town, Lovesong for Bobby Long) and I'm not sure if she's a good actress.
One thing I know for sure is,
Scarlett Johannson is really beautiful.

Sorry to come off as a sexist pig here. Wink

If we had elected John Kerry in November, we could fund stem cell research and Franklin Roosevelt would get out of his wheelchair and walk again.

She wasn't smart enought to sit out "Lost In Translation".  The only worse movie out there is "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Do people often listen to what actresses have to say about politics?  If so, perhaps they should actually run for office instead of star in sh**t movies.  Otherwise, ignoring them is the best option, and one I swear by.

I certainly don't take my cues from celebrities, but many people do.  Here is Arlen Specter on July 6 of this year on PBS' Newshour with Jim Lehrer (Transcript), talking retrospectively about the Robert Bork hearings:

"And back in 1987, when Judge (Robert) Bork was up for confirmation hearings, and I was awakened one morning when the famous movie actor Gregory Peck appeared on a commercial, a radio commercial and was criticizing Judge Bork, it almost made me change my vote."

Specter ended up voting against Robert Bork's confirmation.

She must have gone to public school, too, because I'm certainly sure that's the reason - as opposed to wide media miscoverage - that many people think that stem cell research could cure Alzheimer's.

When Nacny Reagan says stem cell therapy can cure polio, she gets a thread.  The Alzheimer's misconception is a widely held one, not unusual at all.  But the polio bit is what really got to me.

For the record, Scarlett went to The Professional Children's School, a private K-12 school in NYC for child actors.  My apologies to the public school system.

No matter how good or bad that movie is (ain't seen it, see above) it certainly made her into a star. Definitely not a bad career move.

I love Scarlett, no matter her degree of medical knowledge.  I just can't understand why people slobber over waifs like Natalie Portman.  And don't dis Lost in Translation!

Confusing stems cells and genertic engineering is pretty bad, but to be fair, the popular media has played up the idea that stems cells might lead to a cure to Alzheimer's, so only those who are really knowledgeable know that is unlikely.  I think it is an impression that is shared by most people.

Lost in Translation is a good movie...and Johansson is a good actress. I really liked In Good Company actually, I think that is an underrated movie.

She's a very good actress, but she'll never work for NASA.

Actually, given NASA's current state, maybe that's exactly where she'll work.
