I'm going to rent some political movies in a few minutes (one is for school. The other two I'm renting because I'm me.)

The movies are: The Candidate (for school), Bob Roberts and A Perfect Candidate

I think everyone has heard about The Candidate with Robert Redford playing an attorney who runs for the Senate.

I came across Bob Roberts because of it's amazing description - An aging liberal is challenged by a young right winger in a Pennsylvania Senate race. Well if that's not Wofford vs. Santorum '94 I don't know what is!

A Perfect Candidate is a documentary about Oliver North's failed Senate campaign in '94.

So I was wondering.... Has anyone every seen these movies (especially the last two because I've seen parts of The Candidate) and how are they?

You won't like Bob Roberts.  You will think, and probably rightly so, that it's extremely slanted to the left.  However, I thought it was hilarious, and you probably will to while shaking your ahead at the evil pinko comminess of the liberal Hollywood elite which wants to eat your children Smiley.

Bob Roberts was hilarious.  I recommend it, although it is a bit anti-Republican.

Of the three movies I´ve only seen Bob Roberts and I agree with the both comments above. After all it´s a movie written and directed by Tim Robbins (who also plays the title role). Personally, I enjoyed it, but I´m not sure whether it´s the right movie for Keystone Phil. Wink

I just got back. The documentary about North wasn't available so I got this "Tanner on Tanner" movie instead. It's about a failed, dark horse candidate having a documentary made about his past campaign by his daughter but things go wrong at the 2004 Dem convention. It'll probably end up being really bizzare.

About this Bob Roberts, I'll probably end up laughing the hardest. When people poke fun at the people I admire, I always get a big kick out of it (as long as it's not done in a politcally motivated, nasty manner).

For anyone that thinks I won't like it because it's slanted to the left, think about this: The West Wing is my favorite show. Enough said.

Bob Roberts was a good flick, albeit very slanted left.   Look for the minor part played by a young Jack Black.

I only know of Bob Roberts because I saw it in my freshman Political Science class.  Saw The Candidate in my American Government class a year later.

You should get Primary Colors.  That was awesome.  I missed the very beginning, but it was still amazing.

I've seen it atleast ten times. If The Candidate is really bad, I'll do Primary Colors for school.

I watched it last weekend. I was over my aunt's house and since she has gets movie channels with satelitte TV, I was able to watch it without paying Moore.

I just got done Bob Roberts. Very weird and very slanted but so funny. The best past is when Jack Black is one of Roberts' obsessed supporters (along with two others) following Roberts everywhere. When Roberts is shot, Black and the others are chasing after him. "We love you, Bob!" It was hilarious.

Tomorrow - Tanner on Tanner.

I just got done watching "Something the Lord Made" about a doctor at Johns Hopkins University hospital who pioneered heart surgery in the 1940s with the indispensible help of his black surgical assistant, who received no recognition for his contribution due to racism.

It was a pretty moving movie, with a quasi-happy ending when the assistant received an honorary doctorate and had his likeness hung in the gallery at the hospital next to the doctor he assisted.

Not an overtly political movie, but there's definitely a political message.

I've recommended Bob Roberts to Republican officeholders.  It is an excellent film and predates the 1994 Senate race.

I would suggest the original Manchurian Candidate, which I like watching on Mother's Day.  Nothing like the classics.  :-)

So did you like it? I liked it, but I thought Roger & Me was his best.

Tanner on Tanner is based on a series created in 1988 in which Tanner ran for the Democratic nomination.  It had numerous cameos from real politicians including Bob Dole.  I've always wanted to see this series, but have been unable to find it Sad

I noticed that. Very odd how it's so similar to what actually happened.

We watched The Candidate in government class this year...it was decent, nothing special.  A bit anti-Republican as well.

I don't know why, but I always thought Bob Roberts was about Reagan. Yeah, he's young and all, but Reagan was a film star and Bob Roberts was a musician, but they both "used" popular culture to gain supporters. And at the time of Reagan, his brand of conservatism was pretty young, unlike tax and spend liberalism, which was coming out of a generation of holding power. And there was an assassination attempt on Reagan that helped his popularity.
