So if in 2020 there is no SC pick on the line, Trump governs with big government policies like no entitlement cuts, big deficits, fighting courts, etc., an the den nom isn't some liberal bogeyman like Warren; what are the chances of a protest vote by more traditional conservatives?

Near-Zero. Conservatives who didn't vote for him are one demographic where Trump is almost certain to improve on his 2016 performance unless he REALLY messes things up (which is always possible). Even in that case, I don't see why an anti-Trump conservative would do any better than Evan McMullin did in 2016.

What is the question being asked?  Will any American voter cast a 3rd party vote because Trump isn't conservative enough?  Yes.  The Constitution Party, for example, will nominate someone, and there will be a handful of people who vote for their nominee.  And there'll probably be some others too.  That's what always happens.

That dynamic was supposed to be played out this year, with Trump acting in the the role of Perot. We are now in the 'what if Perot had won' scenario.

Trump is the new face of the Republican Party as much as Carter was for the Democrats.
