I could care less, but there should definitely be the passing of anti-discrimination laws for atheists.

It's already illegal.

Oh please. Atheists have the world's biggest chip on their shoulder. They face basically zero challenges in this secular country outside the deepest south and when they try to pry their way into religious organizations. Atheists tend to be "better educated" and wealthier on average yet try to pretend they're disadvantaged and oppressed. Give me a break.

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/05/29/americans-are-somewhat-more-open-to-the-idea-of-an-atheist-president/

53% of the population being less likely to support someone for president just because they're atheist.

Atheists are distrusted more than rapists.

No, it isn't.

No, it isn't.

You can't discriminate based on religion.

Obviously there are exceptions.  If a church, synagogue, or mosque doesn't want to hire an Atheist, that's perfectly reasonable.

seems a little cherrypicked, doesn't it?

Atheists not allowed to live?  Sure, somewhere in the universe you can find a place where they might kill you over it, but you could find a place where they'd kill you over anything.

Atheists not allowed to form a club?  Several universities have "atheists clubs."  I know this for sure.  You could find some universities that won't have an atheists' club, but you can also find a university that won't allow a White Students' Club, and some that won't let the military recruit on campus, etc.

Not become a boy scout?  That's like saying that an atheist is not allowed to become Pope.  Of course an atheist won't be elected Pope, because the job description says you have to be the spiritual and political leader for a particular religion that is monotheistic.  Similarly, the some Boy Scout troops partner with religious denominations.  There are Boy Scout troops that would welcome atheists, of course.

An atheist can't run for office?  Balderdash.  Many atheists have run for office, some have even been successful.  California has had an atheist governor and there have been several atheist congressmen in the past.  If there are no atheists in congress currently, it is because they have not been elected by the people.  This is not to say that they cannot run for office.

There is some prejudice against atheists, just as there is some prejudice against Mormons, against Jews, against Muslims, against Catholics, etc., but this article is over-reaching.  I didn't read the other one.

Fun fact: The God Delusion was the first adult polemic I read, and it made me a rather rabid antithest for most of my adolescence

I guarantee if that said sometime like "non-religious" or "nothing in particular" almost nobody would say they were less likely (okay, maybe like 20%). The word "atheist", for many reasons, refers to much more than someone who doesn't believe in God in this country.

While I do agree that the term "atheist" in particular carries a vehemently negative connotation in the U.S., there is still a sizable portion of Americans with utterly vile and misguided perceptions of non-believes in general. The "you can't have morals if you don't believe in God" crowd is way larger than it should be, but admittedly it also depends on what part of the country you're in.

While there no doubt are some troops that don't abide by the restriction, officially atheists and agnostics are excluded from the BSA. They don't care which faith a boy scout has, but they want him to have one. Buddhists, Muslims, and Pagans are all welcome, but not Athiests.
