Tonight two State Senate seats were up for grabs along with a State House race in play. The two State Senate district's, the 9th and the 22nd, were widely considered Safe D and Safe R respectively before the election. As expected, the results confirmed this:
VA State Senate 09:
✔ Jennifer McClellan (D) - 7,847 - 91.31%
Corey Fauconier (L) - 691 - 8.04%
75 precincts of 75 (100.00%) reporting
VA State Senate 22:
✔ Mark Peake (R) - 11,462 - 54.58%
Ryant Washington (D) - 7,772 - 37.01%
Joe Hines (I) - 1,755 - 8.36%
72 precincts of 84 (85.71%) reporting
Republicans will retain control of the Virginia State Senate.
The third special election that took place was a State House race, and while the seat has been held by Republicans for more than 30 years, the race proved to be more competitive than before:
VA State House 85:
✔ Rocky Holcomb III (R) - 3,300 - 52.87%
Cheryl Turpin (D) - 47.02%
18 precincts of 18 (100.00%) reporting
So after tonight, there are no changes in the composition in either houses of the General Assembly, as Republicans still hold 21 seats to the Democrats' 19 in the State Senate, and the Republicans will still have 66 seats to the Democrats' 34 in the State House.
