Can New York City mayor Bill de Blasio connect with white working class voters in the South and Midwest if he wins reelection for mayor in 2017 and runs for president in 2020? He has some populist roots from his 2013 mayoral campaign that can appeal to them in my opinion (The Tale of Two Americas) theme.

That'd be one way to hand Trump four more years.

He had a populist agenda in NYC. He was an anti-Bloomberg candidate.

He'd lose unless Trump is a bad President (I think there's like a 75% chance that he is). He wouldn't connect strongly with the WWC but I could see him coasting off of an unpopular Trump to a small but comfortable victory in some rust belt states (WI, MI, PA). He would have a hard time flipping OH and a harder time flipping IA. He might be able to take FL too because it's close basically always (2008: D+3 FL, D+7 Nat'l; 2012: D+1, D+4; 2016: R+1, D+2).

As a NYer Bill is a nice guy but awful mayor who even most progressives dislike so if his own base doesn't like him I don see how he relates well to WWC in the Mid-west

There is a 100% chance that Trump will be a bad President. Whether he will be an unpopular President (in 2020) remains to be seen.

Anyway, I agree that de Blasio would not be a good choice. But he isn't absolutely guaranteed to lose.

Are you sure about that? De Blasio would probably lose Staten Island to Trump, and maybe Queens, but that's about it. How would he do on Long Island?

Consdering that Trump actually won Long Island albeit by less than 20k votes, De Blasio would hand Trump Nassau. Queens and Brooklyn would be very close while the bronx might give a republican double digits for once

I don't know about the Bronx...he's pretty popular there.

Well If Dems are stupid enough to nominate a corrupt, under-investigation, boldly progressive mayor of America's most heavily Democratic bastion, then they deserve to lose. Sure, he might win if Trump's approvals are in the mid-30s, but it's just silly to think that de Blasio would be in any way favored. He's a way worse candidate than even HRC

I never said he was favored?

On a very superficial level, yes. He's the kind of fire-breathing left-wing populist who would appeal to left-wing WWC. He's like a coarser, meaner Sanders in a lot of ways, with some non-white appeal thanks to his family.

He's a terrible campaigner with no appeal outside hardcore leftists, though, and would lose to Trump in a relative landslide once he got to the general.

The  real question is whether Trump will be able to repeat his 2016 showing with them.

^^^ for this reason alone, he would do worse than Hillary in Staten Island and WV and worse than McGovern in Macomb County, MI.

De Blasio is basically Hillary 2.0 without the brand or the accomplishments. If Democrats want to connect to the WWC they need someone from the WWC. Other than that I think an African American candidate can best vocalize what they're going through. Not Booker or Harris.

Hey, Trump made plenty of mistakes on the campaign trail and he won the election.

Not that I expect that to happen, but if Queens votes for Trump, the entire state does as well. It's way more Democratic than the state as a whole.

If we're going to insist on using WWC so often, the dumbies running the exit polls REALLY need to start doing "By Income and Race."  A social worker with a college degree is a hell of a lot more working class than an owner of a construction company (and his top guys who work for him) without one.

Very anecdotal evidence... my (Obama-Trump) mom ..... (who is a White rural voter ... which I think gave Trump the win more than the WWC) ... has voted for the winner in pretty much every Presidential election in past 25 years... probably likes Hillary more than de Blasio (and she does not like Hillary).

**On this note.. I think White Rural voters in states like NC, PA, WI tend to be more of the swing voters that decide the election (and often get mis categorized as WWC)

No, his reputation as being anti-police will make him too easy to lump in with social justice warriors.
