What would be the upsides and downsides to a Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton 2020 presidential bid for the Democrats? He's young, fresh, a military veteran. What's his upsides/downsides?

Upsides: Young veteran with impressive background. Massachusetts politicians do well in the New Hampshire primary. He has a decent antiestablishment record (ran against an incumbent congressman; currently supporting a challenge to Pelosi) which could show that the Democratic party is willing to change. A war hero might do well with working class whites.

Downsides: He'll be a third term congressman who will probably stay in the minority party (and if Democrats take the House in 2018, he'll have to balance meaningful legislation with a presidential primary.) As a result, he won't be traditionally experienced or accomplished. He does not appear to be married (cute families help political candidates tremendously.)

I'd love to see something like Al Franken/Seth Moulton, and I'd certainly vote for such a ticket.

Moulton would be a good House Speaker in 2018.

I think he's a rising star in the party (he's my congressman, actually), but he's still fairly new to the House and needs some time to get anything meaningful done. I'm actually hoping he considers running for Governor in 2018 first though, I think he'd make a strong opponent for Baker and it seems that he's at least considering a run. For running for president though, he doesn't seem very charismatic. He's not an excellent public speaker and doesn't seem energetic. I know that shouldn't disqualify him, but it's an important skill for campaigning. I don't see him doing too well in a primary where there are more progressive, energetic options. He certainly has a future in politics and maybe could run for president in the future, but 2020 is too soon.
