The FBI performed a similar maneuver with an ex-governor of Puerto Rico, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, and cost him the reelection (2008) only to reveal right after that he was not involved/culpable in any of the activities of which he was accused.

I didn't know about Stevens, but this is one I lived through so this whole fiasco is bringing back visceral memories.
