I don't think it's in the foreseeable future.  It will continue to be a wedge issue between the parties.

The way I see it, this has the potential for creating a major rift in the party, with traditional republicans remaining pro life, and the more secular alt right promoting sterilizations and eugenics.

They can have both, you know. They will just say that the Government can only effectively govern when they and only they can make these types of decisions over our lives, such as whether or not we have children and who can live.

A follow-up question:

What about an openly pro-life Democratic nominee?

This is what will probably happen (based on the assumption that Hillary wins).

A traditional social conservative Republican wins the primaries in 2020.  Should Republicans win he or she will be renominated in 2024.  If not, a Trump-lite candidate will win the nomination.  The GOP platform will drop all references to abortion.  The majority of pro-life voters still vote for the nominee while some support a third party candidate.  The GOP will then implement a "Northern Strategy," dropping social issues and emphasizing economic populism in the mostly white states in the Northeast and Midwest as most attempts for minority outreach have been abandoned on the national level.  One major talking point will be about immigrants bringing backwards social views to America.  Milo Yiannopoulos already does some of this.

Basically the GOP civil war will be between the likes of Yiannopoulos and the likes of Cruz,Rubio, and  Santorum with people like Ryan  caught in the middle?

That's a simplified version of what will happen.  Social conservatives will be the largest group in the big tent along with a lot of the libertarians, and many moderates as well.  The Anti-Trumpists will probably have the larger numbers at first, but will experience the same divisions as were seen in the primaries earlier this year.

No. He morally and religiously opposes abortion but still thinks it should be legal. He used to be more anti-abortion back when he was governor, but now he's a favorite of Planned Parenthood et al.

I would be happier if he explicitly came out against parental consent laws, though.

It would be unwise for the GOP to ditch abortion as an issue. Maybe make it "nicer" and more focused on preventive methods (I.e. grow some balls irt contraception) as the Finnish pro life movement did.

Unlike some other social issues like gay marriage/marijuana legalization/death penalty, we really haven't seen any meaningful shifts on abortion opinions with my generation. I think this is going to continue chugging along, basically unchanged, as a wedge issue for the foreseeable future.
