Economic collapse that makes 1930 seem like 1845 or 1869.

Democrats/liberals win a few major elections and pass liberal legislation. The inner South secedes, with a gun control law as the single biggest trigger (pun intended).

What sparked it? Lesser states thinking it was OK to be considered equal to the Atlantic coast

Remove Delaware and I'd support that plan.

What could spark that?

1) A tidal wave of ill-considered federal land and environmental regulations, causing WY,ID,UT,NV,AZ,CO,MT,ND,SD,NE,KS,OK to have armed uprisings (consider the disturbingly common sentiments of 'nullification' and 'sovereign citizens'; Armonn Bundy x1000)
2) A supreme court ruling effectively nullifying the right to own guns (i.e. any particular gun can be banned, and any particular screening process or barrier may be enacted.  Also, the BIG ONE.... widespread confiscation of firearms)
3) A rash of political assassinations, possibly starting with the POTUS, and continuing down the line of succession, in a series of retaliatory actions (or SCOTUS justices).
4) A nuclear conflict that escalates to MAD.... though i'm not sure how many state governments would remain standing after that..... But yeah.... DUH.
5) Widespread perception that the supreme court and federal government have effectively outlawed  being religious in any public capacity.
6) If this pattern of anti-immigrant scapegoating doesn't stop, legal and illegal immigration continue, with the commensurate political messaging, we could see a chunk of plains and midwestern states/appalacian states turn against the coastal states and their 'diversity'.    (This is  kinda already happening... obv... but it would need to get SOOO much worse.
