Smash, in the race Generic Conservative vs. Generic Liberal, the conservative would win.  There is a larger conservative base in this country.  If it's Santorum against Kerry, for example, Santorum would win.  However, if it's Santorum vs. a moderate Democrat, such as Bayh or Warner, he would lose.

I think Santorum would find three obstacles consider he got the nomination:
(1)  He's not a Southern or perceived (as is our current pres.) as one.
(2)  He's Senator, not a governor.
(3)  If he won re-election, he'd have to absent from the Senate.
Even with these obstacles, I think he could beat other Senators and non-southerners (except Bayh, but I think that'd be a close race still).
I'm thinking the Bush people are more after Frist.

Democrats that I think could win - Bayh, Warner, Bredesen, Biden (possibly) and Rendell (possibly).

Biden!?! You MUST be kidding! Even Rendell is very doubtful. You seem to think Fast Eddie is going to have a serious problem winning re-election and yet you think he could be elected president? Curious, very curious.

Biden could win rather easily against most Republicans. He would appeal to a lot of Republicans and moderates.

Rendell would carry Pennsylvania and appeal to a lot of moderate Republican states as well.

I dont know if he would right now, it would be close. He's losing alot of appeal here in Berks County due to the Act 72 vs. sales tax elimination battle, and would imagine its killing him in other places like Berks

Look at how PA is when it comes to a Presidential election. If he is re-elected, he can take the state just like Clinton, Gore and Kerry did. Rendell would also take the traditional Dem states and would have a shot at states like Iowa, New Mexico and Colorado. Note how I said he could possibly win the Presidency.

I can't stand Joe Biden but he would pose a serious threat especially when it comes down to the moderate/independent vote.

Keep telling your fellow Dems that. Eddie isn't even a safe bet in counties that he easily won in 2002 (Example: Berks, as you pointed out).

The sales tax is really only an issue in Berks county because of that douchebag state assembly douchebag from Berks (Yes he's a double-douchebag).

I still think Rendell is popular enough to win...but as I've said...a strong opponent could take him out. I just don't see that person in the race right now.

Rendell would also probably do pretty good in Ohio.

Rendell is just too "big city" for places like Iowa, New Mexico and Colorado. I think you are just trying to trick the Democrats on this forum into believing these two guys are for real!

I honestly think he could win those states. I strongly dislike both of them but I have to acknowledge if I think they can win certain states/the Presidency.

Biden blew it in 1988 with his theft of Labour "intellectual property" and comes from an insignificant state. His hair plugs look like hell and he just lacks any charisma IMHO. I don't see him going anywhere. Rendell is just too "big city" for places like Iowa, New Mexico and Colorado. I think you are just trying to trick the Democrats on this forum into believing these two guys are for real!

Biden lacks charisma? Are you kidding? He has more charisma then Kerry, Warner and Bayh put together. And that's not even giving him enough credit.

The Republicans will certainly try to paint Rendell has "big city"...but that didn't work in Pennsylvania. Iowa is moving right, but Rendell would have a really good shot in Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada.

Of all Democrats, why would Biden be one of only a few who could win?  The base doesn't like him (bankruptcy bill and his bashing of Howard Dean and the Democratic base).  He plagiarized.  He won't connect to rural voters.  He won't even deliver a state that the Democrats need.  (Come on, if the Democrats lose Delaware, it's probably at least a 300-350 electoral vote victory for the Republicans anyway.)  The Republican machine would have an even easier time portraying Biden as elitist.

Biden comes across as a strong military Democrat. In the General, Biden can bring in Independents and moderate Republicans.

Umm....Warner and Bayh are much more moderate then Biden, but they can win the nomination?

Biden might run well among Delaware Republicans - but will he appeal to "red" state Republican's to the extent that a guy like Bayh does - because, to be brutally honest, the Democrats ain't going to Pennsylvania Avenue, unless they can win states that were carried by GWB

Biden could be a Secretary of Defense perhaps?

FWIW, I'll agree with that.  I'd probably happily vote for Biden over most Republicans they'd care to offer.
