The shortlist is based on Nate Silver's projection:

1. Utah
2. Alaska
3. New Mexico

Alaska will mostly be Sanders supporters who are left-libertarians.

That chart is garbage.

Utah, obviously. Mormons hate Donald Trump.

Probably the same as it was in 2012.

Interesting that so many of these are red states.

Utah, followed closely by Montana and Alaska. Where's that chart from?

I don't see why Mormons would like Johnson, unless there's a Romney endorsement.

Voted NM, but I'm not at all confident in that.

I'd say Utah, though New Mexico is tempting.

They wouldn't, under "normal" circumstances. I don't buy "Johnson is competitive in Utah", but it may be his best result. Still within a single digits.

Well, he did get 3.55% there in 2012. Probably from those remembering he was a Governor some 200 years ago.

I think I'll go with Alaska. They have a history of supporting libertarians and third parties in general. Utah is a gamble. A lot depends on what Romney does. Montana and New Mexico will have good showings for him, but not as high as Alaska.

Maine will be his strongest state east of the Mississippi.

The thought is that he would be a protest vote against Clinton and Trump.

Utah, followed by Montana. 3rd place is New Mexico.

Utah, Idaho, and New Mexico. I'm not sure how much Mormons will be willing to vote for Johnson, considering his obvious views, but if they really do hate Trump that much, count on Idaho having a decent Johnson vote as well (28% Mormon). Some other natural states where libertarians should have an above average vote are Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and the west coast.

Utah or Idaho, I'd guess.
