i concur that both are mediocre at best, but I would go with Johnson in retrospect, and might have voted Other at the time.

Grant, because unlike Johnson he didn't make his office useless

I think the nickname "Useless S. Grant" pretty much sums up his term in office.

I think the nickname "Useless S. Grant" pretty much sums up his term in office.

No one called him that when he was President. That was his nickname in his father's tanary.

But he did accomplish some things. Solved the Alabama Crisis for starters.

I would have voted for Johnson.

In my opinion, Johnson is rather underrated. He was certainly not nearly as inept and useless as Grant. Granted, Johnson was somewhat ineffective, but he at least had the courage to stand up to the Radical Republicans in Congress. He took a much more sensible approach to Reconstruction.
