It's such a weird outlier. The only state he's won. I know it was a caucus which explains why Trump did so poorly, but if Cruz can even win a caucus in Maine easily, why not Minnesota? It was a fairly comfortable victory too, which just makes it even odder.

Minnesota is a very low energy state/has a unique political culture.

Minnesota likes "nice" guys. Rubio was the best at faking it so he won.

Why not Kasich? He's even a soothing Midwesterner!

Kasich's arm movements were too violent and wild for the Minnesota Nice.

Rubio's smile and er..."good looks" were their safe space by default.

Plus, Minnesota Republicans aren't moderate.  They are very conservative, just not in the Trump way.  Rubio was a great fit for them.

What about Cruz didn't they like? It can't be that he's too religious/moralizing considering they supported Santorum in a landslide. Do they just prefer non Southern ultra religious moralizing?

Minnesota basically voted the same way Iowa did if it had more big cities and associated suburbs.

Cruz did great in some parts of the state, but you have to remember at this point Rubio was actually doing pretty well with evangelicals too.  And yeah gotta agree with realisticidealist on his Iowa comparison.

Minnesota has a good population of educated fools who think they are too good for Cruz or TRUMP.

It does.

After all this is a state that elected Tim Pawlenty.

Exactly. The demographics of the GOP electorate in Minnesota suited Rubio better than just about any region in the country other than NoVA. Rubio knew that and invested in a ground game there. I think he was the only candidate with paid staffers in MN.

This is true.

Minnesota nice? This is the state that didn't mind sending Al Franken to the Senate twice.

Cruz and Trump ignored the state, while Rubio campaigned there a lot.

You must remember (you should remember, it was less than 2 weeks ago) Minnesota was held before Rubio was a TOTAL joke, he was only kind of a joke. Regular conservatives had not yet started defecting to Cruz and Kasich was still not considered serious.

Precisely.  Kasich made zero effort here at all, and on March 1 Rubio was still the leading anti-Trump candidate.  (Even though the MN caucuses, held in the evening, started after it was clear Rubio was on course for a bad night, it wasn't obvious yet how bad of a night it would be).

Cruz still has a decent shot of "winning" the state (i.e. actually controlling the delegates) on the second ballot and beyond...or even the first ballot should Rubio drop out.  I'll keep you posted on that front.

The result surprised no one who's familiar with what type of people actually go to Republican caucuses in Minnesota.

(The Iowa comparison above basically nails it.)

Why did Santorum win so easily in 2012 then?
