I don't think we realize how close the bullet we just dodged was. Based on those maps, it appears he may have been deluded enough to think he could win the Electoral College outright, and might have been fairly close to entering.
Those maps really are awful, though I almost have to hope they were based on some polling. Most of the western states were left blank since obviously there is no use polling there, and the ones that were filled in are states where there is likely to have been some polling.
They apparently polled people and 40% said they hadn't a clue about him, and the other 60% said he was a nannystate gungrabber.
They then told some generally favorable information about him, and the people who had never heard of him apparently said that they would vote for him.
That large parts of the west were "tied" probably indicates they didn't have a large enough sample size for the state.
