The  hostage   are not taken  in iran. the economy is fair. how does Reagan fare  against president Carter?

That requires a butterfly in December 1979 at the latest that may very well cause Reagan not to win the nomination.

Carter got an initial bounce from the crisis in a rally round the flag effect that enabled him to overtake Kennedy in the polls and get an insurmountable delegate lead early. Without it, Ted Kennedy would have beaten Jimmy Carter and it would be Kennedy vs Reagan. If Eagle Claw succeeded somehow, then Carter likely wins narrowly.
