McCartney was the best musician who happened to play the bass. I probably wouldn't say he was the best bass player, though.

Steve Harris from Iron Maiden.  Honorable mention to Roger Glover of Deep Purple.

John Entwistle was the best in terms of playing with lots of volume (Boris the Spider), and having a certain flair for fat virtuoso bass lines (How Can You Do it Alone).  His bass was not just the foundation, it was a lead instrument.

Out of this list it's got to be John Paul Jones. Such a versatile bassist. Just listen to Ramble On or The Lemon Song.
John Entwhistle's playing is also a thing of raw beauty. His bass on The Real Me is just brilliant. And of course the timeless solo in My Generation.
Paul McCartney certainly wrote the most amount of brilliant songs out of this list, though as a bassist he doesn't have much on the two guys mentioned above.

Out of this (limited) list, JPJ takes the cake. However, as a big Rush fan,

By far the best bassist in his genre. All bassists dream of replicating his "YYZ" bass line.

Wow. Best bassist thread and nobody mentioned Geezer Butler, Steve DiGiorgio, Chris Squire and Cliff Burton.
