The Point of Divergence is that Zack Stanton, a former congressional page, never provides transcripts to news organisations of sexually suggestive texts and emails sent by Republican Congressman Mark Foley to teenage congressional pages, and so the resulting scandal is avoided.

The Republicans have taken a hit in this year's midterm elections. The 'six-year itch' struck, and a Democratic wave swept the House to the Democrats for the first time since 1994, but the Senate remains Republican. Opposition to the Iraq War, anger at Congress, anger at President Bush over Hurricane Katrina, failed Social Security reform, high gas prices and dissatisfaction with Bush and the GOP led to the Democrats getting a strong showing. However entrenched Republicans kept key seats and managed to keep the Senate. In Missouri, Jim Talent was re-elected, while in Virginia Senator George Allen won re-election, and set the stage for a 2008 presidential bid from Allen. Pelosi claimed the results as a mandate against Bush and his policies, but Mitch McConnell, who replaces Republican Bill Frist as Senate majority Leader, claimed the results were "a vote of confidence in the Republican Party", and "show that we are trusted to defeat the terrorist threat, not the extremist liberal Democrats." President George W Bush's approval rating is stuck in the high 30s. American politics now shifts to the 2008 election, and this result has positive signals for the Democrats, but also hope for the GOP.

You go to a person's profile and click "Add to Buddy List," which sends them a PM asking for acceptance or denial of the request. If they show up, they appear as your "buddy."

RUMSFELD WON'T RESIGN, BUSH DEFENDS DEFENSE SECRETARY, VOWS TO 'STAY THE COURSE' ON IRAQ-NOVEMBER 7, 2006
Controversial Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld isn't going anywhere. Rumsfeld has faced calls to resign due to the perceived failures of his Iraq War policy, and sources in the White House indicate a resignation was on the cards. However President Bush announced today, despite calls from Democrats and some Republicans, that Rumsfeld will stay until the next President. Bush vowed not to "change horses midstream" and defied Democrat claims of a mandate to end the Iraq War to promise to "stay the course. Not surrender."

FORMER SENATE MAJORITY LEADER BILL FRIST FORMS EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE FOR 2008 PRESIDENTIAL RUN-NOVEMBER 28, 2006
Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has formed an exploratory committee for a run for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. With Bush term-limited, and Vice-President Cheney not running, the field is currently in flux as frontrunners emerge and fall. A recent poll has shown Rudy Giuliani 26%, John McCain 23%, Condoleezza Rice 13%, Newt Gingrich 6%, Bill Frist 6%, Mitt Romney 5%, George Allen 6%, George Pataki 1%, Mike Huckabee 1%, Chuck Hagel 1%, Sam Brownback 1%, Duncan Hunter 0%. Frist has been Senate Majority Leader since 2003, but is now retiring, after a controversial tenure in which he was closely associated with the Bush administration, a potential weakness if the President remains unpopular. Frist says "I think America needs a President who can protect the conservative cause home and abroad, and so far I'm not sure I see anyone with what it takes."

Former North Carolina Senator and Democratic vice-presidential pick for 2004, John Edwards, is running for the 2008 Democratic nomination for President of the United States. He announced his candidacy in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the yard of a home still being rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina. Edwards stated that his main goals were eliminating poverty, fighting global warming, providing universal health care, and withdrawing troops from Iraq. A recent nationwide Democratic primary poll showed Hillary Clinton 34%, Barack Obama 15%, Al Gore 13%, John Edwards 13%, John Kerry 5%, Joe Biden 2%, Wesley Clark 2%, Bill Richardson 2%, Evan Bayh 1%, Christopher Dodd 1%, Tom Vilsack 1%, Dennis Kucinich 0%
