If the GOP mocked Trump on birtherism in 2010/2011, would he be where he is?

Let's say the GOP decided to mock Trump on the birtherism nonsense in 2010/2011, instead of giving his antics their silent approval.

In a world where the GOP mocked Trump on his birther issue, would Trump still be where he is today?

Once Obama released his birth certificate, it would've been a moot point.

I don't think you understand what I'm asking.
I'm asking....
IF the GOP had pushed back hard against birtherism in the beginning, ridiculing Trump as a clown from the beginning
THEN would Trump have been able to gain enough traction to become a GOP candidate, and would he then have even wanted to be a GOP candidate?

Basically my hypothesis is this: if the GOP had rightly made fun of Trump on birtherism back then, they would have squashed his presidential hopes before they even began, and Trump probably wouldn't run for President, and the GOP wouldn't be in the hole they're in right now. If they had just soundly rejected birtherism from the start, none of this would be happening right now to them, with an unhinged Trump in the lead.
