A few weeks ago, there was a discussion about dark horse candidates for Veep. And it is worth noting that they sometimes win nominations (See Republicans 2008.)

But who would be the least surprising running mates?

My guesses...

On the Republican side, it would be Susanna Martinez, Nikki Haley, Kelly Ayotte, and John Thune. Depending on the top of the ticket, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, Carly Fiorina, John Kasich and Rob Portman would be possibilities.

On the Democratic side, it seems that Tim Kaine, Mark Warner, Julian Castro and Cory Booker would be the expected potential running mates for Hillary Clinton. If a man were to win the nomination, Kirsten Gilibrand and Amy Klobuchar would be the ones the media was paying the most attention to.

Is there anyone I missed? And I did I mention anyone on this list who should be included with the dark horses?

For Republicans I see Rubio as the number one unless he's on the top of the ticket. Ayotte, Martinez, Fiorina, and Kasich are all good picks as well.

I think Julian Castro is the top pick for Hillary, Tim Kaine would be a stronger pick imo though. You're right if Biden wins or even Sanders I think they're gonna pick a woman. Gilibrand is better than Klobuchar imo.

Rubio would be good for anyone except himself (obviously) and Bush (since they're both from Florida and can't risk giving up its EVs).

I still say that Cathy McMorris Rodgers is a more likely possibility for Republican veep short lister than people are thinking.  If the presidential nominee wants to consider a woman with Washington experience, there are only so many options.  Ayotte would be better if she was available, but the fact that her seat is up in 2016 complicates things.

IIRC, Romney looked at both CMR and Ayotte back in 2012, and they were on the list when it included about a dozen or so people, but then he cut the list down to seven, and they didn't make the cut.

Rubio, Ernst, Portman, Kasich, Ayotte, Sandoval and Martinez for the republicans. It all depends on the candidate though, I would imagine that Kasich is the top choice for someone like Walker or Rubio because experience + Ohio.

Bush could pick Kasich too but that would be a relatively old ticket (both are mid sixties if I am right) so he might pick one of the younger persons on this list. Sandoval, Portman, Ayotte and Ernst probably are the frontrunners for veep is Bush gets the nomination. Portman isn't very young either, but still 4/5 years younger than Kasich.

Martinez would appeal to hispanics and women but she probably wouldn't bring New Mexico to the republican side while Ayotte still has the appeal to women and Sandoval still has the appeal to hispanics and they might bring their states to the republicans even though NH and Nevada probably are lean dem (especially Nevada). And Martinez and Sandoval only have executive experience just like Bush while Portman, Ernst and Ayotte (and Kasich) have legislative experience. And if Bush doesn't pick someone from Ohio and Clinton picks Brown Ohio will very likely go dem and that would be a huge blow to the republicans. Portman's SSM stance and Jeb's stances on common core and immigration might anger the base though.

My predictions:

Rubio/Kasich
Walker/Kasich
Kasich/Rubio
Bush/Portman
Trump/Palin

For the dems I think Clinton will pick Kaine, Castro or maybe Sherrod Brown. I don't know who Biden will pick, Klobuchar or Gillibrand maybe?

Which of the prospective VP candidates face 2016 reelections to the House or Senate from states where they're legally prohibited from appearing on the ballot for two offices at once?

U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA)

Is he a candidate for the Democrats or the GOP?

I love Casey.  Politically, I'm a pro-life moderate at heart.  But the Democrats have made so much of the abortion issue, I can't see how Casey (A) would accept such a nomination, and (B) whether or not the Democratic Feminist Left would stand for it.

On the other hand, Casey as a GOP VP would be a coup.  That being said, he is liberal on most other issues, and I have not heard of him being ready to bolt a la Zell Miller.

Democrats: Gillibrand, Kaine, Warner, Castro, Heinrich, Murphy, Hickenlooper, O'Malley

Republicans: Rubio, Fiorina, Martinez, Kasich, Thune. If they weren't up for reelection, I would also add Portman and Ayotte, but Republicans need to hold onto these competitive seats to maintain the senate majority. I don't see Republicans risking that by picking either of them.

In my opinion, for Republicans Joni Ernst or Tom Cotton or Tim Scott would be a serious game-changer. Rubio would be, but he is talked about way too much. For Democrats, Tsongas or Kennedy would be a game changer for Clinton, while DeBlasio or Newsom or Warren would be good game changers for any non-Hillary Democrat.
