French president and German chancellor: usually, opposite parties

Since the beggining of the French Fifth Republic, during most of the years, the president of France and the chancelor of the FR Germany belong to opposite parties. When the French president is a gaullist, the German chancellor is a social democrat. When the French president is a socialist, the German chancellor is a christian democrat. Even though, they establish good partnerships.
Considering that German politics is on the right of French politics, the difference between a French socialist and a German christian democrat might be bigger than the difference between a French gaulist and a German social democrat. But Mitterrand and Kohl were close allies. And Hollande has no trouble with Merkel.
