I think that 43% is the absolute floor for both parities. A 55-43 victory is the best someone could do in this day in age.

Generally, I agree, though I think Trump might be an exception to that. I'd also say that Clinton's floor is more like 46%, and it might be the same for Bush.

Surely Walker winning in Wisconsin means that Mitt Romney was perfectly placed to win, since he won in one of the most left leaning state, heck I'd even wager that Christie could win after bridgegate. State politics is a different ball game to a presidential election.

It's also short sighted to see Wisconsin as 100% liberal-it voted for a die hard tea bagger in Ron Johnson

The majority of the Republican posters in this thread are full of **** with deliberately refraining from acknowledging that midterm elections turn out a fraction of participating voters who do vote in presidential elections.

Wisconsin is a Democratic state. It's not New York, Massachusetts, or California - but it's a Democratic state. Scott Walker's wins there are impressive, but they don't translate nationally because Wisconsin is less diverse than the nation as a whole.

Extremists lose elections. There's nothing moderate about Scott Walker.

That's why he lost and Governor Tom Barrett has served two terms... oh wait.

LOW TURNOUT, A REPUBLICAN WAVE AND HE RAN AGAINST THE RECALL!!1!

PUTTING EXCLAMATION POINTS AND ONES AFTER A REASONABLE STATEMENT MAKES IT FALSE!!1!

Yes, this is why every Governor in a mid term election has been a Republican forever, oh wait.

I'm not sure about easily, but it seems like when he leaves his comfort ground - unions, hatred of - the guy starts to crumble.

His strategy is the good old polarisation. Whip up opponents and supporters alike in hysteria, assume that genuine swing voters are irrelevant dullards (I agree fwiw) and pump up the base with some enemies, invented or not. Could it work on a national level? Well, maybe. One hard thing is that on the "union issue" many states are not as already whipped up on the subject as on other issues. In fact it seems the base are wound up about immigration, healthcare and maybe iSIS, subjects which make Walker gibber and sputter.  His campaign has also been fairly inept, recklessly heading into territory he is unfamiliar with, like a gay guy trying to finger a girl. It all seems very amateur IMO.

He won as a Republican in a swing state in a Republican year. I don't see what's so impressive about that. Other than the fact that he's so right-wing, but that will only help him in the primary.
