The fact that Buchanan sent an army to crush the Mormons after getting false reports of the Mormons rebelling from whiny federal officials shows one way he was terrible as president.

Pretty horrible and pretty disgusting how whitewashed this is in American history.  On the plus side, at least it helped result in the Republicans gaining the House in 1858.

Horrible from which end, the Mormon or the Federal side?

Yes, and the fact that it wasn't even amongst the three worst things he did as POTUS is telling to how dire he was.

It should be obvious which, given how prevalent the narrative of "the bloodthirsty morman" is even in US textbooks.  That, and this is barely even mentioned a lot of time when discussing Buchanan, though I guess that has more to do with him already being extremely horrible enough without the anti-LDS paranoia.

Ah, Utah textbooks tend to ignore or completely gloss over the Utah War, and obviously we Mormons don't mention it beyond "dang federal government" so I was curious to see non-Mormons and non-Utahns view on it.

Well it is not super consequential, but it seems that many historians go out of their way to defend anti-Mormon bigotry (much multiple wives much theodemocracy) while also making light of wars against Native Americans, anti-immigrant nativism, and even in some cases the reason why the South seceded.

Needless to say there is bias in the books.
