The campaign of 1920 ended in a deadlock, with no candidate claiming enough electoral votes to win the election outright. Thus, for the first time in more than 20 years, the House of Representatives would be forced to choose between the three front-runners: popular vote winner Al Smith, incumbent President Hiram Johnson, and Populist champion Oscar Underwood. The Senate, meanwhile, must select either Governor Coolidge or Congressman Cox for the vice presidency.

The choice is yours. Vote wisely.

Results of the 1920 Presidential Election

State Senator Al Smith (Democratic-New York)/ Fmr. Congressman James M. Cox (Democratic-Ohio): 263 Electoral Votes; 38.9% popular votes
President Hiram Johnson (American-California)/ Governor Calvin Coolidge (American-Massachusetts): 163 Electoral Votes; 36.1% popular votes
Fmr. Vice President Oscar Underwood (People's-Alabama)/ Fmr. Secretary of State Thomas R. Marshall (People's-Indiana): 105 Electoral Votes; 25.0% popular votes

Underwood/Coolidge for the sake of chaos by having the first place finisher lose.

1921 Contingent Election, First Ballot

State Senator Al Smith (Democratic-New York): 19 States
President Hiram Johnson (American-California): 16 States
Fmr. Vice President Oscar Underwood (People's-Alabama): 13 States

While the Democratic gains in the 1920 Congressional elections allowed Al Smith to win a plurality of state delegations in the House, the residual strength of the American and Populist caucuses denied him, or any other candidate, a majority on the first ballot. Meanwhile, in the Senate, a much more conclusive battle took place, with Governor Coolidge narrowly defeating Congressman Cox for the vice presidency.
