From The Hill

Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) has “no intention” to run for president in 2008, but a media communications firm that represents him has registered a slew of relevant domain names in case the senator changes his mind.

New Media Communications, an Ohio-based Internet strategy company that runs Santorum’s 2006 reelection website, has bought domain names such as ricksantorum2008.com, ricksantorum2008.net and santorum2008.org.

Casey spokesman Marc Farinella said, “This is just more evidence that serving the people of Pennsylvania is not Rick Santorum’s top priority. I think it’s safe to say that Pennsylvania would be better served having a senator focused on doing a good job for Pennsylvania than by a senator focused on becoming president. In any case, after he is defeated in 2006, Mr. Santorum will have plenty of time on his hands to pursue his presidential ambitions.”

Um, some firm buying domain on his behalf for a 2008 presidential run is somehow speaks poorly of his senatorial abilities? What total idiocy.

And this is coming from a guy who just got elected to, what, state treasurer?

Can you stop that. Can you realize for just a minute that he's one of the most popular officials in the state. I wish we could laugh at his candidacy but we can't.

So far, the only two candidates who have purchased domain names are Feingold and Santorum.  (That I am aware of)

I posted this mainly because I got a kick out of the extremley cocky comment by the Casey spokesman.

"In any case, after he is defeated in 2006, Mr. Santorum will have plenty of time on his hands to pursue his presidential ambitions."

I expect a lot of candidates do this well in advance.  I wouldn't even care to speculate on whether Santorum gave the order to do this himself - it was probably just some forward thinking people in the internet company.  I wouldn't read too much into this at all.

As for that stupid sounding Casey spokesman, what a jackass.

You do understand that that's not what Phil was saying at all right? He was stating that Casey is quite a serious candidate.

Given that it is cheap to acquire domain names and a PITA if an opponent gets a hold of the obvious ones, plunking down a couple hundred dollars as an insurance policy seems like a good idea.  Since I'm sure that New Media Communications will charge Ricky's campaign more than what they paid for the domain names if he does run, all this points to is them making a speculative investment in the future.  (BTW, any word on ricksantorum2008.us ?)

Allen shouldn't have a problem, unless Warner decides to run.

(Sorry, I know the point you're trying to make, but I couldn't resist)
