From The Baltimore Sun:

Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin plans to announce Tuesday that he is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Maryland's Paul S. Sarbanes, several sources said yesterday.

Cardin, 61, a 10-term congressman and former speaker of the House of Delegates, has shied away from runs for higher office before. But the Baltimore-area Democrat has told party leaders of his intention to make a bid to succeed Sarbanes, who announced last month that he will not seek re-election next year. Cardin has e-mailed and telephoned hundreds of supporters and beefed up his campaign staff in preparation for the run, top Democrats said.

"Ben would make an excellent candidate," said his Democratic colleague, Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Baltimore County, who said he has spoken with Cardin about his plans but declined to comment on them. "He's got a tremendous amount of knowledge. He knows the issues that are so important to our state."

As long as Cardin is the only one challenging, he will be the winner of this Senate seat, imo.

Who would you lean towards in a Steele vs Cardin race?

dunno, probably Cardin (who has actually been fairly concilliatory in the House, overall, iirc, which I like a lot), though like I said I'm still not familiar with CDs that I don't live in here.

I've only been in this state about 1 1/2 years now.  Give me time.  Smiley

As for his House seat, what do you think will happen and who will run?

I like Ben Cardin's nephew, State Delegate Jon S. Cardin.

Other potential candidates:

State Sen. Paula C. Hollinger (Baltimore County).
Del. Maggie L. McIntosh (Baltimore City).
Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens.

90% chance that MD-3 stay's DEM.

He's been around for awhile, this is his 10th term in Congress.  I'd say he's more moderate than Sarbanes, but still fairly liberal.

Cardin is the ultimate career politician...he was elected to the House of Delegates when he was 21!

He's very mainstream Dem, more or less ideologically perfect for the state.
