Sandoval won reelection by a bigger margin in a state that is slightly less Republican than Ohio. Plus he could help pull some more Latino votes than usual. Yet, people are talking a very big lot about Kasich, while Sandoval is rarely mentioned today (as far as I've seen). Why?

I doubt either will run for higher office in 2016, but Kasich is being floated for President and Sandoval for the Senate, and that's for a reason. Sandoval is too moderate for the GOP Republican primaries, he's from a small state, and he's yet to indicate any interest in the Presidency whatsoever.

Because he's a Latino in the Republican Party, of course. The fact that he'd be a very dangerous electoral proposition for the Democrats and that he's still not being talked up says all that needs to be said (unless both he and the RNC already know that he has some huge skeleton in his closet that was never unearthed in his bids for Governor and therefore wouldn't risk running for national office, where it'd almost certainly be revealed).

Sandoval is pro-choice. Being pro-life seems to still be a litmus test for GOP prez primaries

Sandoval's job is to run against Reid. Therefore, Kasich, the 2nd most moderate swing state (republican) governor, gets to run for president.

Unfortunately, Sandoval is too moderate to win the primary. Besides, we need somebody to unseat Reid. Wink

That. He's pro-choice and that's the kiss of death.

Yeah, Sandoval sadly has no chance at the nomination.

I'd argue that the next best choice is Bill Haslam, though, not Kasich.

Meh.  If Rudy hadn't campaigned like a moron, he very well could have been the nominee in 2008.

Sandoval is pro-gays, pro-choice, and strikes me as a moderate on other issues as well and isn't a very good public speaker. He'd be toast in a republican primary.

You're looking at it the wrong way around.  The media doesn't simply look around the country for potential candidates who it thinks would be strong and then generate presidential buzz about said candidates with no external influence.  Rather, the candidates who are interested in running and their surrogates purposely whip up presidential buzz for themselves, and then the media reports on it.  Kasich and his people have expressed openness to the idea of running and Sandoval hasn't.  It's as simple as that.

That said, in recent months, Kasich has sounded more lukewarm on the prospect, so I don't necessarily think the chances of him running are all that great.  But Sandoval has expressed zero interest, AFAIK.

He's barely even shown interest in taking on Reid, let alone the White House.  He just doesn't really want to move to DC.

Actually, if Rudy would have campaigned not like a moron and stayed in NH, he would have split the indies with McCain, leading to a Romney victory in that primary by a couple of points and then the nomination of either Huckabee or Romney, probably Romney since the money would have preferred him to Huck.

He's pro-choice, and has less experience. Kasich is Governor of a larger state, and was a prominent member of Congress.

He also hasn't participated strongly in the so-called invisible primary.

Because Sandoval, has not expressed the slightest interest in running, while John Kasich has.
