The US Postal Service and the Obama Administration are considering doing away with Saturday mail, a staple that's been in American homes for the last century save for a week in 1957.  The USPS tried the same thing in 1957, but President Eisenhower got so much response against the idea that he signed into law a bill that would restore the 6-day a week mail delivery.  So, there was only one Saturday in 1957 that was missed.

Another thing to consider in this question is that in 1957, most mail were favorabe (i.e. letters).  Nowadays, the majority of the mail is either junk mail or bills and very few personal letters and/or legitimate rebate/refund checks.

Do you support the idea and another question, do you see it gaining steam with the popularity and the speed of electronic mail?  Is the irreplaceable look and feel of a handwritten letter enough to keep your mail coming every day except Sunday?

I see no harm in ending Saturday home delivery, so long as the post offices themselves are still open for a part of each Saturday.

Yes, and I support establishing Sunday mail.

At the very least the post office should be open.

I'd expect a Libertarian to support fully privatizing the postal service.

I don't view this as an "anti-privatization" deal, if the government had post offices open on Sundays it would also encourage the private mail firms to also be open on Sunday. I'd like to see the postal service a little bit more privatized, but I don't think I would be able to support full privatization.
I hate waiting until Monday to ship or receive stuff.

Hahah, that's the first thing I thought about when I read the question. With six days of mail, I can do two movies a week (on the one movie at a time plan); with only five days I'd get one movie a week.

Once again the most selfish posters pimp red avatars, I love it. (on the other hand, it's always the same handful of posters so maybe I shouldn't blame all reds.  If opebo got mail from the USPS I'm sure he'd of been here by now telling us how horrible it would be.)

Anyway, if the USPS wants to end Sat delivery to save some money, I'm all for it.

I'm all for increasing mail delivery days, not reducing them, and I don't see anything 'selfish' about it as I doubt anyone on here gets mail.  I simply support it because it is good economic policy - hard to beat the post office for good working-class unionized jobs.

No, getting the bills on Monday would be better since Mondays suck anyway.

The post office itself should be open for sure, as some people don't have time to take off of work to go on the weekdays. I've had to go on Saturday morning a number of times to pick up a package since the post office closes before I'm even near home on weekdays.

As to actual delivery, I don't really care one way or another, so no I don't oppose it.

I agree with a lot of posters on here in both parties.  I'm not opposed to stopping delivery, as long as the post office stays open on Saturday mornings.

However, I am not in favor of opening the post office on Sunday.  As a church-goer, I would be willing to sacrifice convenience of doing business on Sundays to allow the employees the opportunity to exercise their first amendment right and worship wherever and however they choose.  I will concede that some business is necessary on Sundays (i.e. grocery stores, department stores, home improvement stores, etc and other 'essential' establishments), but other commerce-related businesses such as banks, post offices, government offices, etc. should be left alone on Sundays.  Basically, I like things the way they are right now, save that I wouldn't mind losing Saturday mail.  Since I don't do Netflix, it won't affect me.

I'm willing to accept it.  But I do use the USPS more on Saturday than any other day of the week.  I ship a lot of stuff and Saturday is my day for that!

If it was absolutely necessary as a cost-cutting measure, then I'd be okay with trimming Saturday delivery.  I do agree with most posters that post offices should be open for other business on Saturdays, even if delivery has to be cut.

All in all, though, I'd rather a stamp go up a couple more cents than lose Saturday delivery. Forty-four cents per letter is still the best deal in town.

Germany's postal service has just admitted to having halted (or rather near so) monday mail for july and august, without telling anyone aforehand. They'll be back to full service "after the vacations, when there is more mail."
Note that the spam-to-actual-mail ratio in the German mail is still a lot more favorable than in America.

Now that's a cool bureaucracy.  Just keep getting the salaries, but only operate 2/3 of the time.  Good economic policy and pleasant as well.

Not quite. They just didn't hire lots of short term workers for the holiday season as they usually do.
