Ooh, this is interesting. Because last night I went to a grand dinner, then staggered home at midnight (turning into a pumpkin along the way) half-cut, and went into my local 24 hour supermarket to pick up food, and they were playing the song I thought for a long time was number one when I was born.
The song I always thought was number one when I was born was
We All Stand Together by Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus. I thought that because my mother told me that was number one when I was born. Indeed she told me she got the hospital radio to play it for her.
But, that song wasn’t number one when I was born. I could forgive that if the real number one was something instantly forgotten. And if I were a lady and the number one when my first- and only-born son was born was, say
the Joe Dolce Band, hell, I’d tell the kid the number one was actually the great Third Man-inspired
Vienna.
But looking at Wikipedia the number one when I was born was actually Band Aid, Do They Know It’s Christmas. I can’t stand Geldof, but really? You’d pretend instead Paul bloody McCartney and a song out of Rupert Bear The Movie was up there instead? What’s wrong with my old lady? If you have to pretend why not say I was born ten days earlier and Frankie were number one?
(And yes I turn 30 quite quite quite soon
