In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson decides not to run for a full term as President, due to poor health.  All other big name Democrats, Hubert Humphrey, Edmund Muskie, Eugene McCarthy, Stuart Symington, Mike Mansfield, J. William Fulbright, take a pass.

The party nominates hard working and experienced, yet little known, Rhode Island Senator John Pastore for President.  Pastore had filled many elected positions, including RI State House of Representatives, Assistant Attorney General for RI, Lieutenant Governor of RI, Governor of RI, and has been serving as U.S. Senator for RI since 1950.

For Vice President, they nominate capable yet equally little known Illinois Governor Otto Kerner for Vice President.  As Governor, Kerner championed such causes as economic development, education, mental health services, and equal access to jobs and housing.  Kerner has been serving as Governor since 1961.

The Republican Presidential nominee is well known conservative and high profile Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona.

In an effort to appeal as well to more moderate voters, Goldwater has chosen well known and highly respected Pennsylvania Senator Hugh Scott, former member of the House of Representatives, and Senator since 1959.

Very improbable situation.

Pastore wins over Goldwater but Goldwater does better with the fact Johnson does not take away the southern/mountain base.

Pastore: 55% PV, 352 EV
Goldwater: 44% PV, 186 EV

Cool, a John Pastore scenario. Well, my simulator doesn't recognize him as a candidate, so I can't produce a number. However, no Democrat could've lost in 1964, which makes me wonder why so many of those men (Especially Humphrey, Muskie, and McCarthy) who had huge aspirations would've turned down the offer.

This looks about correct, though I would give Pastore Tennesee as well.
