The cops should have responded with.  How about we just agree to one point:you can protest, nobody can break the law.

Marching down the street, singing songs, chanting chants is fine.  Throwing sh**t, burning convenience stores and shooting each other is not.

I'm not outraged by any of them. Some of them are kind of odd, including the last two in the OP, but they're not horrendous.

Less silly than you might think. Countless other times have shown that if the cops come in dressed like SEALs raiding Bin Laden, it needlessly escalates the situation. It's all psychological.

I highly doubt neither "burning stores" nor "shooting each other" is covered under the term "minor lawbreaking". Maybe it's just me, but I consider murder and arson a slightly higher calibre of crime than "throwing a water bottle".

if you have an angry crowd, antagonising them further is ridiculous and counter-productive.

Obviously, I am fully against the absolutely heinous crime of throwing plastic bottles, but I highly doubt it will help matters for the police to start using force against the entire crowd.
