McCaskill is from the Kansas City area, correct?

No I believe she is from Central Missouri.. born in Columbia if I remember correctly.

Talent is a major favorite, probably 7:1 minimum, I'd peg him 9:1.

Obviously

I'd really like to see Dick Gephardt give it one last hurrah here, but that's dreamland.

I'm salivating at the idea.  What a tease!
And, I've said it before, I think that McCaskill can pull it off.  This race is closer than people say it is.

According to Wikipedia, she went to law school in Columbia and then moved to Kansas City where she was a State Rep. there.

Even if she doesn't win, she will force the GOP to spend some serious cash here, taking away from their resources in other states.  Win or lose, a McCaskill run is good for the Dems.

I see.  Well I think here in Missouri her 'roots' are most important, and I believe she was born somewhere outstate.  Also oddly enough the rural dullards do not have the same dislike of Kansas City as they do of St. Louis.  Many say St. Louis is culturally an eastern city, so maybe it just rubs them the wrong way.  Also KC Missouri isn't large enough to politically dominate the state - something St. Louis comes closer to achieveing.

I've read on a few blogs that McCaskill is definitely in and should announce this week.

The "Common Sense vs Out of Touch Washington " Line is a good theme, a lot of challengers and incumbents alike use it anyway, but this year there seems to be a growing anti-incumbency feel wafting about the country, a "throw the bumbs out" attitude that will be aimed at all incumbents, though is most likley to hit the majority party... ie. the GOP.

The seats up for election in the senate and the gerrymandering in the house, may help diminish the impact of this sentiment, if indeed it remains a factor in a years time, but I don't think it'll be a good year for the GOP in 2006, though they'll keep hold of congress people look likely to have an old fashioned midterm election, namely hammering the majority party.

First tier races like MN, OH and PA are going to be “fought over like cats over fish”, second tier race like MD, FL, MO, MT are also going to get interesting if the anti incumbency wave materialises and even the longer shot races like those in NJ and TN could become competitive for the challengers, though as I say such a wave will hep the Dems as the minority party more than the GOP.

Nine years later, McCaskill defeated Talent narrowly, became an supporter of Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, and won luckily against a very conservative congressman Todd Akin who used some nasty remarks about women's issues. McCaskill may face Talent in 2018 if she runs for re-election, or she may run for governor in 2016 or be on the Democratic ticket in 2016.

When people bump really old threads, for a brief moment I think I'm back in that particular year.
