Out of the 20 most senior members, he's the only one who isn't a committee chair or a ranking member. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seniority_in_the_United_States_Senate

How come?

I figured it would have something to do with his generally outspoken positions and traditionally maverick behavior that might put him at odds with the leadership at times.

McCain chaired committees on several occasions back when he was an actual maverick, so that's clearly not the case.

Indian Affairs and Commerce, Science and Transportation.  Not exactly committees I can easily imagine McCain sitting on let alone chairing, I know.

6-year term limits. He served from 2006-2012 as ranking member of Armed Services. I'm not sure why he didn't retake Indian Affairs, but my guess is he just didn't care.

If Wikipedia is to be trusted, he's poised to take over as ranking member of Homeland Security when Coburn leaves the Senate. Or he could take over as Chair of Armed Services if Republicans take the Senate.

Didn't you know that any woman who publicly states an opinion is automatically an attention whore?

It's kind of funny. We can call McCain an attention whore but we can't say the same about Wendy Davis. She gets special treatment. There's progress for ya... Roll Eyes

Feels crappy when some smartass makes a crude offhand comment about one of your political heroes, huh?

Let me guess: you're one of those guys who doesn't get why black people can call each other 'ns' all they want, but if a white person does it...??!!

No, not really.  Unless you're trying to argue that the origins of the word 'whore' aren't gender-specific.  Which of course would be incorrect.

"Attention whore" (note the qualifier) applies to all genders and is said by people belonging to all genders. If we really believed on this forum that it was tantamount to throwing around the N word, this thread would've been torched to the ground ages ago. The fact is, we don't. Or TexasGurl wouldn't have invoked it in the first place.

You don't seem to understand.  Qualifier or not, for a man to call a woman a 'whore' is generally not cool.  For a man to call another man (or even himself) a 'whore'; no big deal.  Likewise for a woman to call a man or another woman a 'whore'.  Hence the parallels to the n-word.

Now, Davis and McCain are both public figures and we're just people on some internet discussion board, so none of this is a big deal.  I'm merely explaining to you that some words still require some thought before being casually thrown around.

If you don't see the difference between "whore" and "attention whore," our differences on this are irreconcilable. Sorry. It wasn't something that went through anyone's head, including mine, until people got all butthurt that I decided to defend John McCain against typical BS.

If anyone is legitimately offended by my quoting TexasGurl's use of "attention whore" (or believes that it is comparable in tone to the N word), I apologize. I did not mean to invoke millennia of female suffering with words that everyone uses to normally far less reaction.

If it's okay to call a male politician an attention whore, it should be appropriate to call a female politician the same thing, especially in the context where the politician's gender is unrelated to the insult.

If the use of the term "attention whore" against a politician bothers fans of the politician, they should reconsider the use of the term in all contexts.
