The first televised debate in the Maryland gubernatorial race took place tonight, at UMD and moderated by David Gregory. Previously, the candidates have appeared in forums where they give successive speeches w/o meeting face to face. There will be one more debate for the Democrats in early June, at MPT studios in Bawlmor. The Republicans running will also have a debate on MPT. The debate went as expected: Gansler and Brown attacking each other with Mizeur staying out of it. Gansler came out the winner vis a vis Brown's attacks, while portraying his plan to lower the corporate tax as key to future economic development. Mizeur did exactly what she needed to do: seem like the only candidate with real solutions and she tied in her living wage proposal nicely to civil rights and income inequality.

Here's some views on the debate.

"In all, I see no game changing moment, though Gansler certainly helped his cause Brown's weak performance wasn't deadly and Mizeur was denied the breakout moment that she needs"

"By avoiding any major missteps that might have threatened his status as front-runner for the Maryland Democratic gubernatorial nomination, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown benefited the most Wednesday evening from the race’s critical first debate."

and here's a bunch more

So in other words, Brown won the debate ?

Does Maryland have runoff elections for statewide offices?

IMO, Gansler and Mizeur came off the best, but Brown didn't really do any damage to himself. He won by not losing, I guess. And no, we do not have runoffs. Brown is still the frontrunner but most people have yet to tune into the race, so a loss by him is certainly possible.

Brown could choke like Manziel did tonight.

Just saying.

Brown's more like Khalil Mack. Skilled, defensive, not flashy.

I'm wondering who's the Johnny Manziel of the 2014 elections?

Scott Brown: over hyped and probably a bad fit?

Isn't Gladening among the many reasons that Maryland Dems lost the governorship in 2002?

To the best of my knowledge, it was mostly due to the weakness of Townsend as a candidate. Fun fact: Glendening coined the term "smart growth."

Didn't Glendenning marry another woman while in office following divorcing his first wife?
