Who was this Eugene McCarthy?  Was he the (2000)Ralph Nader of 1976?  Did he actually swing any states toward one side or the other?  What were his views/ideology?

He was a liberal. He swung Oregon, Iowa, and Maine to Ford; he might have also swung Oklahoma.

McCarthy was a Democratic Senator who challenged LBJ for the Democratic nomination in '68.  The Minnesota DFL Party was mad at him for challenging LBJ and he decided not to run for re-election to the Senate, thus giving a Minnesota Senate seat back to Hubert Humphrey in 1970.  Afterwards he became a Presidential candidate, first for the Democratic nomination again in '72 and then as an Independent in '76, swinging the states that Bob named.

I think he ran 2 other times as an independent, though not seriously.
