Good. People need to be reminded of the immense benefits our society derives from competition.

A half joke about the "darwinian way of thinking." Not as funny as it seemed in my head when I posted it.

Seriously though, Darwin doesn't need his own day. Holt is probably just trying to be provocative.

I like how the first thing the article mentions about Holt is that he's a Jeopardy champion.

In IL we are a bit biased towards a different person born on Feb 12, 1809 and already have that day as a state holiday. Smiley

Heh, I didn't know Lincoln and Darwin were born on the same day!  Learn something new every day, I guess. Smiley

Fully support this one. Terrible that it's "controversial," or at least I'm assuming it is since it's been tried before. Now I'm not entirely sure what goes on in science curriculums, but it would be nice for people to know not only what Chuck Darwin did, but how and why; i.e., philosophy of science.

Makes sense given how during his term as President, his views on what to do about slavery evolved. Wink

Nobody does, apparently.  I went on a tirade about it here two years ago when it was all Darwin all the time.  200th anniversary and all that.  No one even mentioned Lincoln.

"A day to recognize the importance of science in the "betterment" of society?!  Sure, why not?  But in that case let's have an Einstein Day, then.  At least he became a U.S. Citizen.  Or better still, a George Washington Carver Day.  I could understand if the English wanted to Make February 12 Darwin Day, but it is highly inappropriate for us to do so.  Especially when everyone already totally ignores the fact that Lincoln was born on that day.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of this bill.  I would discourage it in congress.

Honestly, I'd like a Jonas Salk Day. Dude basically eradicated polio in all but a few places.

Good idea... But because Darwin introduced evolution, I'm willing to bet Boenher won't bring up for a vote.

I would prefer a general Scientific Achievement Day, possibly on the birthday of Newton or Einstein or Galileo. Wouldn't oppose this though.

And it would be less "in your face, Jesustards" then Holt's proposal.

Much better idea.  I attended Jonas E. Salk elementary school for most of the fifth grade.
