It just seems that its counterintuitive to go after people who are a burden to society. Why have to pay for go after them, trying them and warehousing them?

Exactly.  That's the main reason why we have extradition.  It's not just to keep our criminals from going elsewhere, but to keep alien criminals from coming here.

There might be a case for the French approach - don't extradite your own citizens, but if they murder someone overseas, try them in the US under US law.
