Siren, do you have any idea about the cost/savings from dumping this bill?

As for the bill itself: I agree with you on NCLB, but the teacher evaluation metric doesn't appear to include test scores. Or am I missing something?

I understand that there is skepticism towards connecting a teacher's salary to the test scores of his/her students. I am a part-time teacher in RL myself and realize that the perfomance of students doesn't solely depend on the quality of teaching. Thus, I'm ready to remove this part from the text of the bill. However, repealing the entire bill goes too far in my opinion. I would therefore like to put forward the following amendment to the original text of the "Teaching Reform Act of 2012":

I'm all for granting teachers as much freedom as possible, but there must be a way to evaluate the work they do and reward those who excel at their profession and admonish those who do a bad job. That's why I'm reluctant to repeal the entire bill.

You could give a bonus for good score but not base the salary on that...

This is not my own bill so I need an Assemblymember to introduce this amendment on my behalf. There is already a certain degree of separation of powers, you see. Wink

Well, I don't want to have the entire bill repealed, which is why I support making amendments so that we can improve what we currently have.

I'll sponsor the Governor's amendment, although I'm not sure yet how I'll vote on it.

While a reduction of costs of more than $2.5 billion sounds attractive, we must bear in mind that the bill which is going to replace the "Teaching Reform Act of 2012" is also going to cost Money so it's not clear if we will end up with a better or worse (from a budgetary perspective) plan.

If there are no further amendments, we'll take this to a final vote.

As the author of the 2012 version, I would urge the Assembly to reject this legislation (Sorry Siren Sad).

I was indifferent to the passage of the first bill.  Quite frankly I'm indifferent to repealing it.  But I'm not a fan of repealing something in order to replace it without knowing what the replacement will be.  I hope Siren realizes that by simply doing a blanket repeal, she may not get the bill he wants after this.

She.  And I'm well aware that my plan might not pass, but I've argued a few different times that I think we would be better off even with no legislation on the issue.  I'm opposed to evaluation based pay systems.  If you want to get an idea of what I'd like to replace it with, check out my campaign thread.  It was my first policy post of the campaign season.

Yes, I know... bad habit from virtually never having a woman in the Assembly. my bad.

We will now take this to a final vote.  Members will vote AYE, NAY, or ABSTAIN.  This will be a 48-hour vote.

Voting is now closed.  The AYEs are 1, and the NAYs are 1, with 3 not voting.  Not having reached a majority, the bill has failed.

Wow that was really disappointing.

If there had been a more concrete replacement laid out, I'd consider it.  But the fact that there was only one AYE vote, combined with that missing made me too hesitant.

I'd like to apologize for missing the vote. I don't have a good excuse; I just didn't see it. I was still undecided but was leaning towards supporting it. Siren, if you're elected Governor, I look forward to seeing your plan.
