But seriously, Joe Republic, why would I want to 'contribute to society'?  What am I, some serf?  Screw 'society'.
Too bad I already have an outrageous quote in my signature, cause this one's great.

Cooking is not "a lot of trouble", and it's not "astoundingly inefficient and difficult" either.

Opebo, if you don't work, cook, or do anything seemingly productive, may I ask what you think you contribute to society?

He adds to Aggregate Demand

Haha, so true, though mainly in Services, as I find possessions burdensome.

But seriously, Joe Republic, why would I want to 'contribute to society'?  What am I, some serf?  Screw 'society'.

How Republican of you! Wink

Pshaw, I believe you have a misconception of the Republicans.  In any case, I think the whole idea of 'contributing to society' is nonsense, since contribution is such a subjective concept, and society is clearly a heirarchy designed to benefit only its very topmost members.  Those who work hard might as well be proud of their 'contribution to the owning class' rather than the deceptive word society.

So, you don't accomplish anything, because you'll just help the rich?

Please, if everyone had that attitude, we'd still be digging roots out of caves.

I ate the bugs and grubs - they're just a nice snack.  Definitely far from my favorite Thai foods.

Opebo, what do you think of that analysis of Thai cuisine (taken from another forum)?

You don't realize how lucky you are to be from the US, opebo...

...and how lucky he is to spend half the year outside it.

Not that the US is that bad or anything, but how many people can go overseas for six months and basically just holiday? He's pretty lucky to be able to do it.

Well, it sounds rather inadequate.  Of course the bugs and cockroaches are not something that even most Thais eat - it is just one of a huge variety of snacks available.  Some northeastnerners like them, most people don't.  I liked them, but rarely ate them.

As for the hot peppers, there is really no reason to eat them on their own.  They are nice in a dish, but anyway, it sounds like this fellow might've had a very limited range of taste, like so many westerners.

Finally, the comments on beef are true in the sense that beef is a minor part of the cuisine, however there are two or three delicious beef dishes.  I happen not to like beef all that much, and prefer fish, chicken, pork, and duck, so I don't mind.  Anyway a burger is a disgusting thing anywhere.  Anyone who would travel to Thailand - land of so many delicious foods - and complain about a burger must be a fool.

It's not meant to be a comprehensive list- those are only the foods that he disliked. Have you tried the cobra wine, by the way?

No.. but I believe I heard of it.  I'm not a huge drinker.  I'll wager cobras are pretty expensive.
