4 days, 5 choices.

Unique former Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy is running as an independent with no single named running mate. McCarthy began his career as a left wing Democrat, made his fame in opposition to the Vietnam war and Presidential runs in 1968 and 72 in the Democratic primaries. In 1976 he is running as a more eclectic candidate who has drifted to the libertarian right in some cases. McCarthy supports civil liberties, attacks the IRS, supports full employment by shortening the work week and backs nuclear disarmament.  McCarthy is also against campaign finance regulations  and OTL in 1980 he would endorse Libertarian Ed Clark, and also Reagan.

Famous "faithless elector" Roger MacBride is the Libertarian nominee, MacBride is a TV writer by profession. His running mate is LP party activist David Bergland.

Former Georgia Governor Lester Maddox is the AIP nominee, Maddox is an ardent, fire breathing, unrepentant segregationist. Outside of his support for "state's rights" and opposition to civil rights, Maddox is a white populist with right wing religious appeal. Maddox is a former supporter of George Wallace as well. The conservative Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin, William Dyke, is his running mate.

Conservative author and activist Thomas Anderson is the right wing "American" party nominee. Anderson was John Schmitz's running mate in 1972.

Peter Camejo, a left wing, anti-war and civil rights activist is the nominee of the Socialist Workers party. Camejo has a colorful political history and his running mate is African-American  Willie Mae Reid.

Torn between McCarthy and Camejo, at the time McCarthy (but he would drift to the right later on), in hindsight Camejo (Who would become less radical).

I'd write-in Margaret Wright/Benjamin Spock.  Smiley

Wright/Spock were excluded because they fell below the .1% threshold in terms of the historical results.

McCarthy wins with 314 electoral votes and winning a wide variety of states, his only real weaknesses being the mountain west and south. Macbride does well in those areas and garners a total of 184 electoral votes, his campaign did pick up big wins in NY and TX but it wasn't near enough. Camejo comes in 3rd with 40 electoral votes, and they come from 5 states, all in different regions of the country.
