And how do you think they explained themselves if their grandchildren and great-grandchildren saw them in those photographs?

I can't make out what the sign the lady is carrying in the first one says...

Not sure why you're calling them state's rights advocates unless you're trying to draw some sort of extremely tortured analogy to modern politics. But HPs, obviously.

Horrible people, "Race Mixing" is when a society accepts itself and its people. These racists can't seem to accept their world around them. Think of it like this: People campaigning against gay marriage. That's how popular and "OK" it was to be racist back in the day.

The sign in the first picture says "THANK GOD FOR STATES' RIGHTS." They are protesting in front of the New Orleans school that Ruby Bridges, a young black girl, was attending for the first time.

I wouldn't call them horrible, just ignorant and misguided. Of course racism is awful, but unless any of these people actually killed a black person, they're not horrible people.

HPs, of course, but let's be real.  These people didn't really support "states' rights."  They supported segregation, and they just distorted states' rights and used it as a cover and an excuse to support an unconstitutional institution.

The second picture has been posted before. My comment was:

It somehow manages to look like a cross between a summer outing to the big city and a fascist rally.

I would agree with this if they just casually held those views. Many people at the time did. But these people took time out of their day to defend this. Sure, they aren’t the Klan, but they are not as innocent as the rest of the Southerners who just stood by and casually held the racist views they had.

To quote the always quotable Bob Dylan, The Times They Are (in this case, were) A Changin. America is over this nasty stain on our history.
