This was a big enough deal for the guy who basically led the development of Google Earth to be in Minneapolis this weekend. I not only met him but at one point rode in the same car as him.

What I want to know is why Google thinks LARPing is a better thing to fund than Google Reader.

Also, I have now totally seen two ads for this thing now outside of Atlas- both on the door to two separate Duane Reades (a big NYC pharmacy chain owned by Walgreens).  The second one kind of creeped me out, and/or had me wondering if someone in Walgreens corporate is also sponsoring this thing.

The reason Google takes so much of an interest in it is pretty obvious: It's a data mining dream*. And it has a few corporate sponsors now, rewarded with their locations being portals (ZipCar, Jamba Juice, and obviously a few phone developers and carriers have deals), but haven't heard of Walgreens yet. Most of the ads for it are more viral in style, so perhaps that's why they're being put in such places.

*Oh and per what I heard from the developers here: Because basically everyone in Google plays it and if anything ever messes up or goes wrong they'll all come running to their department and demanding that they fix it ASAP.

Anyway anyone who makes fun of this game should really play it to see just how fun it is. Last week there was a night when it was basically just like a "agent out in the field getting info from handler on remote" situation in a spy movie, I got called and told I was the only asset in the area near an Enlightened supply operation going on two blocks from me and I needed to disrupt it. Once they scattered the woman who called me kept feeding more info on where they were going and what was going on, including the fact that at one point I was being tailed by one of them in a car. Yep, real life car chases. (thought not Bourne style obviously.)

What's funny is that BRTD actually has more of a life than most of the people here who criticize him. Yeah he obviously posts a lot and has some strange obsessions, but he has a job, friends, and what appears to be a social life. Compare that to other posters, like some that spend an entire week posting creepy GIFs of gymnasts.

BRTD used to annoy the hell out of me in the old days...but then a whole new group of posters joined..might as well think of them as the horsemen of the mental apocalypse...he seems downright reasonable.   Cats and dogs living together.  Mass hysteria.

Yeah... I don't really care one way or another.  The annoying thing is the way BRTD goes about talking about Ingress.  From the way he talks about it, you can tell he's baiting people to attack him.  He's found yet another thing that people think he's quirky for / make fun of him for, so now he's milking it.  And that drives people to make fun of him more, and thus feeds his strange desire to be made fun of.
