Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley (D) defeats State AG George Deukmejian (R) in a hotly-contested general election for the governorship by 1 percentage point.

He also would have stopped outgoing Gov. Jerry Brown (D) from selling the ranch-style Executive Mansion in Carmichael by offering to have Bradley supporters pay the tab and costs of living there.

*In 1986, Bradley faces Deukmejian again, but wins reelection by 20 points.

1990: US Senator Pete Wilson (R) defeats Diane Feinstein (Bradley due to his age, doesn't seek 3rd term).

1994: Wilson wins re-election by a landslide over CA State Treasurer Kathleen Brown (D).
