It was quite an evening at a forum for the Republicans running for Texas lieutenant governor hosted by the Tarrant County Tea Party.

We got to hear their thoughts on the president...

And they don't take kindly to outsiders listening to their orgy of anti-Muslim rhetoric. Eventually, one journalist had to contend with some of the rubes...

The only thing missing from the whole horrid scene was the most R-Texas of all the R-Texans, Louie Gohmert.

Someone remind me again how important the Texas Lt. Governorship really is...is it like most other states where the campaign is your last chance to get news time before being disappeared for 2 to 4 years...or is it something else?

It's hard to explain -- but the real power in Texas is with the Lieutenant-Governor. The Governorship is a largely ceremonial position.

The Texas Lt. Governor is the most powerful Lt. Governorship in the country.  The Lt. Gov is President of the Senate not just in name only, but actually gets to decide committee assignments and bring legislation to the floor.  Theoretically, in a split situation, a Democratic Lt. Governor could also load the budget or another important committee to majority Democrat even if the body were majority Republican.

The Lt. Gov of Texas is also in charge of forming redistricting commissions for U.S. and State legislature seats at their discretion.

It's a monarch position.

The Texas Lt. Governor is arguably more powerful than the Governor. On paper anyways. Perry has had more clout than the average Texas Governor by virtue of having been around long enough to appoint yes-men to every slot of every agency and set himself up a nice political machine. Normally the governor's duties are mostly ceremonial. The Lt. Governor on the other hand is the President of the Texas Senate and actually does run the Senate. That isn't just a ceremonial title like the VP or the Lt. Governors in some states.
