...and that fact that MLK Jr. refused to endorse any political candidate or get involved with electoral politics.

Yeah, even if for some reason MLK did enter the 1968 race it would be as a third party, not as a Democrat.  Heck there were still some Deep South state Democratic parties hostile to voting rights in 1968.  In those states, the Democratic Party might well have put Wallace on their ballot.

Indeed if you want a three-way matchup between Nixon, Wallace, and King, it needs to be:
Nixon (R)
Wallace (D)
King (I)

Or that he lead the Poor People's Campaign, openly criticized capitalism, opposed the Vietnam War, supported a guaranteed income, and had Bayard Rustin, John Lewis, A. Phillip Randolph, and Jesse Jackson all in his inner circle.  He also admitted in the 50's that while he was undecided between Stevenson and Ike, he'd usually voted for the Democratic ticket.

That was back when it was possible to be both a commie and a Republican like Nelson Rockefeller was.

Rockefeller wasn't a commie.

So we have a progressive republican in Nixon vs a racist piece of trash in Wallace vs a Pastor who fought tirelessly for equality under God's terms. If King reached out to Goldwater/Reagan and the libertarian conservatives I vote for King. If not I write in Reagan/King.
