Not at all surprising that the NRA isn't rushing to her defense.

This woman was convicted in about 15 minutes based on the facts which the prior posters simply don't care about.

I searched "Marissa Alexander" on Google News. There are more stories discussing the potential racism of  the Zimmerman and Alexander cases than there are on the actual Alexander case. Thanks media!

fact schmacts

Some people see a "gotcha" and their brain stops.  I've done it before, it's easy to do.  I'm embarrassed when I do it.  I hope you all will be soon.  This story isn't as cut and dry as it seems.

(on the other hand, 20 years is probably too much, on the other other hand, she should have taken the plea deal of 3 years, on the other other other hand it seems both parties are pieces of dog poop...I feel bad for their children)

It seems she wasn't in the right here, but she shouldn't be jailed for the 1 year much less 20.  mandatory minimums are the worst.

Let's hear it for legal and responsible gun owners, ladies and gentlemen.

If these are the fact then I am not sure that stand your ground works here.  Of course I do not claim to know a lot about the details of the law.  The way I am reading the info above  Alexander feared for her life but left the house to get her gun.  Why did she not just drive off if she was fearing for her life?  I think the Zimmerman situation does not match here.  Even if Zimmerman provoked the fight (which is not at all clear) by the time he fired the shot he claimed (and I think the jury believed) that he was in immediate danger that only firing a shot could save him.  Alexander did not seem to be in this situation as she on her own walked from her car back in the house and then fired the shot.  Unless of course her husband did something to make her feel her life was in danger once she went back in with her gun.  I find that hard to believe as she had the gun and not him.

Did this (the sentencing) happen 2 days ago or over a year ago?

The red staters here (minus Harry) have a "gotcha" and won't let facts get in the way of that.

The sentencing is pretty pathetic given other trials, but yeah she was in the wrong here.

If I were on the jury, I probably would have nullified.  She broke a law and definitely acted in the wrong, but since the punishment was so severe, it's better to have her walk.

Juries are not usually told what the sentence will be with the exception of capital cases where they decide whether the death penalty will be imposed.  They probably didn't even know that 20 years was an option.  Based on what I've heard, the conviction was correct, tho the sentence seems too much.

Clearly she was in the wrong, but she got 20 years for being black.

The US judicial system does not believe in the possibility of a black person being a responsible gun owner.

There's racism and then there's imagined racism based on minimal knowledge.

She got 20 years because of a mandatory minimum law. She committed a crime and the sentence was simply too excessive but the judge's hands were tied. An example of why mandatory minimums are a bad idea? Sure. An example of racism in the judicial system? No.

The NRA doesn't support gun violence. We don't know the whole story, only what the media wants us to know.

What does the NRA support then? Keeping guns as decoration? The only use of a gun is violence.

On the bright side, at least they aren't ignoring female/male abuse like most people.
