This contradicts various comments made by senior officials to the effect that there are no documented cases of abuse of NSA spying:

After the government told us one big, giant, bold lie about the existence of NSA programs, can we really trust anything they have to say about any of the details? At this point, we literally have to expect the worst.

Of course they have.

Doesn't surprise me at all.

Why is this surprising? Let me just ask everyone on the forum this question. Would you not abuse your powers if you worked for the NSA? Are you telling me we're all just a bunch of happy moral people who would do our best regardless of what governments have a history of doing? Are we really that special?

And I'm sure IRS officials have audited people they don't like.  TSA guys have forced arch enemies to go through a pat down.  Cops harass people all the time.  I'm sure every agency and department has had at least one employee do something similarly unethical.  It's only news because the NSA is hot right now.

And I'm sure IRS officials have audited people they don't like.

I remember a friend of mine who worked for the IRS enforcement division...we belonged to a fraternal order together and we were driving to Philly.  Well a state trooper pulled him over for speeding (rightfully so).  My friend shows him  his IRS badge and politely asks the trooper for a little law enforcement professional courtesty.

The trooper went off, literally blew his stack at the suggestion and nailed him for the full speed.  My friend went to the hearing hoping the trooper wouldn't show but he did, and again he wouldn't budge.

I'm 100% confident that 10 years later that trooper is going through a yearly anal exam by the IRS.

Indeed, that's far worse than spying on an ex gf.....which you can do without being in the NSA.

I don't understand what degree of authoritarian personality one must have to excuse this, but I wish I lived in that state of ignorant bliss. Well, not really.

I'm not seeing anyone truly excusing it, but I  just don't think anyone's surprised by abuses of power by anyone who has power.
