Should be noted that not all that long ago, Rubio said that the bill as is was better than the status quo:

Yesterday Rubio told FOX he didn't think the bill even had 60 votes to get out of the Senate.  And prospects in the House look even worse.

I suspect he wont be too bothered if the bill dies at this point.

I suspect he wont be too bothered if the bill dies at this point.
Yet at the same time, Lindsay Graham and Harry Reid said it did have 60 votes.

And Republicans saying it will die in the House seem to forget that Boehner said there would be a vote on the bill... so as long as there's a majority of Democrats and just enough Republicans, it will pass.

Filibustering your own bill seems to be pretty typical these days.

Roll Eyes  Deja vu -Republicans wrote the script during the Obamacare debate of 2009 (i.e. demand changes to the proposed law, and then once they get those changes promptly vote against it when it comes to the floor, and then accuse President Obama and congressional Democrats of being overly partisan and divisive), and seem to be following it to the letter with immigration reform.

There is no real negotiating with these people -the Republican Party is simply unfit to govern....

The motion to proceed/debate should come next week and their goal is to have the legislation pass the Senate by the end of this month so we'll see what happens. If it doesn't pass this year, I think it's pretty much dead until 2017 as 2015-2016 will have a reduced Democratic majority in the Senate or even a Republican majority. I guess 2014 is possible too but it's an election year and House Republicans will be even more concerned about primaries compared to 2013. On the other hand, only about 20 of them would need to vote for it to get a majority with House Democrats.

I love how suddenly the new talking point is that it's DoHS fault that an immigration bill isn't getting the support of conservatives in congress. Anything to excuse their own ridiculous archaic views, their bigotry and their failings at compromising.

Political failure is bad for a political career. I don't mean being defeated in an election bid.

Turning against a bill that one introduced indicates bad judgment at some point -- or being bought. OK, the latter is bad judgment.

Lol. He's so pathetic. According to me, he will be a kind of Rick Perry in 2016!

Sometimes, I think there are too different Rubios in the Senate. "Tea Party/ Rand Paulish" Rubio and "moderate hero/ John McCainish" Rubio. Tea Rubio doesn't like moderate Rubio.

No wonder he is so interesting!  Tongue

But seriously, if the immigration bill goes down in the Senate, wouldn't any hopes Rubio has on 2016 be a bit tarnished?

Which one? Sorry, I had to do it.

I think Rubio sees that his immigration bill can kill his chances in the primaries. It's better to drop it earlier rather than later. I do not think he wanted to be seen as Rand's sidekick (like Lee), so he needed to distance himself. He did it the wrong way. The sooner this bill drops dead, the sooner people will forget. It is possible he is realizing what kind of trouble this bill can bring him... or he might just be a nutcase without a clue. One or the other.

Things are looking more up on the immigration bill again.  Paul Ryan endorsed the House bill: http://thehill.com/homenews/house/304041-paul-ryan-endorses-immigration-bill-after-conservative-negotiator-walks-away

and now Rubio is sounding more upbeat on the Senate side: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/304091-rubio-vows-to-pass-immigration-reform#ixzz2VpWfaprK

The dynamic here is that Rubio wants to pass immigration reform, but he doesn't want to pass a version of reform that Democrats love too much, because that'll hurt him in the 2016 primaries.  He wants to pass a version that Obama signs somewhat reluctantly, so that he can actually tout it as a kind of victory over Obama.  The strategy for doing that is to threaten to blow up reform every now and then (as he's done a few times now) if it doesn't get some Republican amendments that Democrats are squeamish about.

Unless they remove the path to citizenship entirely (which Obama will never sign) it will still be characterized as "amnesty for illegals" by the nativist wing. Some candidate is going to stake out the anti-immigration reform ground (Santorum, Ted Cruz, someone else?)

Here's Rubio's latest answer on whether he'll support his own bill:

Lizza will have a long New Yorker feature, but here are snippets leaked to Politico. None of those quotes surprises me.

So Rubio did vote for the bill in the end (despite breaking with the rest of the Gang of 8 on some of the amendments):

link

Also voting for the bill?  Every single Senate Democrat.  Among other potential 2016 presidential candidates on the GOP side, Cruz and Paul both voted against.  Chiesa (not a 2016er himself, but closely watched because of suggestions that he's a puppet of Christie) voted for it.
