I'm trying to figure out a neat way to have a timeline with multiple Presidents running at the same time.

Right now I'm thinking -

Year 0 - President A is elected. Very popular doesn't run for a second term. After leaving office becomes an independent.
Year 4 - President B is elected. Democrat. Decently popular, ups and downs. His own share of issues. Doesn't run for a second term.
Year 8 - President C is elected, Republican. Not very popular but a fighter. Supporters tend to be passionate.
Year 12 - President C will run for reelection. President B is running for Democratic nomination but his VP from Year 4 is running against him. President A announces that he will seek the Presidency as an independent.

I'm trying to figure out how to realistically make this more of a mess.

I realize, but thats 2 Presidents (former is Teddy, current Taft). I want to make it bigger --my idea starts with 3.

What about 1984. Just as in real life Carter defeats Ford in 1976. But Carter's Presidency is not a great success (altough also not a great failure either). In 1980 Reagan runs for the Presidency and comes close to asking Ford to join him on the ticket. At the last moment, without informing Ford, Reagan chooses Bush and Ford feels betrayed. Reagan wins, but in a far closer election as in real life. After 1980 Ford becomes a Independent. In 1984 Reagan is running for reelection, but his position is not great. Carter decides to jump in and reclaim his old job. And at the start of the election year, Ford also joins the race as a independent, trying to win the Presidency but also have his revenge on Reagan.

It would be really interesting if you did a timeline where in the years leading up to 2016, the Democrat and Republican party split, so that the campaign is Green vs Democrat vs Republican vs Libertarian.
