I mean they have vigils everywhere and often, not just for the Boston bombing.......for me, no.  If I want to grieve or reflect I'll do it in private.

When my Dad got his death sentence as it were, I repaired to my favorite spot on top of a ridge in the middle of Utah, and just sat there for a day. I don't know if that counts a "vigil," but that is what I did.

I was thinking along the lines of something a bit more public, you know, so I changed the title.

It was a medical diagnosis, which I then looked up at the medical library at UCI, to find out the verdict.

Ah. Still, I'm sorry to hear that.

Well, yes, because the word "vigil" does not connote a witness or whatever in public, as opposed to private.

Yes; my family and I attended a candlelight vigil after Sandy Hook.

I don't understand the appeal of putting one's emotions forward so publicly. I can't help but to see it as tacky and self-centered. Then again, I'm very introverted.
Most people are social creatures, who feel better in a group than locked up inside a house. As Americans, we're terribly isolated. It's nice to be part of a crowd from time to time.

I'm usually not one for grieving in public, but a death can really turn things upside down. I was thirteen when my grandpa died, and I was right in the middle of that "I will never hug my parents in a million years phase." I remember bawling into my mom's shoulder for a good fifteen minutes on the day of the funeral. So things change.

Would I go to a vigil for someone I didn't know? Probably not. But if something happened to someone close to me and there was a vigil... I can't say I wouldn't go. Especially if it was a shocking or unexpected death.

I've attended a wake at the dead old woman's home. Does that count?

I attended a candlelight vigil in Riyadh after 9/11 and a much larger one after the May 12 2003 bombings in Riyadh. I did attend a wake/vigil at my grandmother's funeral of course, and I cried like a baby (I was in Grade 12 at the time) when they took the casket into the car.

Indeed.  I hope the question wasn't viewed as a slight.  I'm just a very private person in real life.

When my step-uncle was killed two years ago, they had a candle light vigil. My mom, aunt, and uncle went, but I could not go as it was in Vero (a good hour and a half away) and it was a school night. I did not really want to go anyway, as we rarely see that side of the family at all, and it would be awkward to meet my step-cousins who have likely never heard of me at a time of such grief.
